Project type
4 Bay With Room Above
Location
Margate
Upon Russell’s visit to our offices in Ashford, Kent to discuss his upcoming project, we knew that this build would be an interesting one. After initial site visits, HB Oak Frames started the ball rolling with obtaining planning permission for a very impressive double storey office, studio and equipment storage building in Margate.
This project was very in depth from the start which allowed us to take on more of a project management type role, appointing an Oak Frame Designer, Structural Engineer, Building Control, Groundworkers and Roofers.
Our regular Designer worked with all parties to produce a frame design that would work both structurally and effectively for Russell, whilst looking aesthetically pleasing. During this design stage, material choices were discussed and Russell opted for bespoke guttering, sand coloured bricks, reclaimed roofing tiles and Velux windows. Wood fibre insulation was chosen to help with insulation values and reduce noise from the adjoining main road and railway.
Once the design was finalised and structural calculations undertaken for both the frame and base, our trusted groundworker literally hit the ground running with site surveys, marking out, pre-works and of course the groundworks and brick plinths. Due to the groundworker’s expertise and knowledge on falls and drainage, works were completed without the supply and installation of a waste pump and pumping chamber, saving costs for Russell.
Protection of Russell’s existing driveway and foliage was of high importance and protection was applied in the form of ply sheeting to protect the driveway and Heras fencing to protect the foliage.
Once groundworks were complete, it was HB Oak Frames’ turn to begin the oak frame install. Due to the limited access, the large oak components had to be strategically placed with the artic trailer disconnected from the lorry and backed into the job, with the trailer positioned on the roadside.
An impressive four bay lift and a half building with a room in roof. This space has exposed contemporary braces, sandblasted to give a clean and modern finish and five Velux windows which flood the area with light, this structure really does give a feeling of grandeur. On the ground floor, a garage area with parking for two vehicles and a separate adjoining area for office / studio space with bespoke doors provided by others.
After plasterboard was fitted in readiness for plastering, HB Oak Frames’ agreed remit was complete with Building Control being handed over to Russell for his final finishes and checks.
This install was a great one to be involved in and we have certainly enjoyed helping aid Russell to get the finished structure he had in mind.
